Jamie Monsell Burgos, LCSW
What inspired you to choose a career in social work / professional counseling?
As a teen I always wanted to be the one people came to for assistance. I was always able to relate to anyone despite differences. When I decided to study psychology and social work, I wanted to learn and try to understand what drove people to make certain choices in their world. I also knew I wanted a profession that would never be the same day to day!
Can you describe any therapeutic modalities or techniques you use in clinical practice?
I practice strength based and trauma attuned approaches. I utilize motivational interviewing techniques as well as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I will explore other modalities to best meet my clients where they are and help them discover their needs on our journey.
What’s a hobby or interest you enjoy outside of work?
When not being a mom, I enjoy taking dance/exercise classes, going to the beach, family vacations, thrift shopping, and finding time for friends and family.
Do you have a favorite book, movie, song or quote that inspires you?
I’m not sure how inspiring they are, however, I love 80s movies! A song that I have always been fond of and that is inspiring to me is "The Rose "by Bette Midler.
How would you describe your approach in practice?
I love to explore the clients’ interests and ways to align with them. I will seek all opportunities to invest in their stories and hobbies to help guide them in ways that make sense to them. I’m never afraid to sit and play on the floor or be active outside if that’s what inspires change and builds rapport. I feel the relationship you build is the most important factor in therapy.
